Abstract

421,506. Wood-working machinery. ROBINSON & SON, Ltd., T., and TWEEDALE, J., Railway Works, Rochdale. Feb. 16, 1934, No. 5145. [Class 145 (i)] A wood-tenoning and cross-cutting machine is provided at each side with a beam 12, Fig. 1, having sprockets 13 for a driven feed chain 14. Above each beam 12 is mounted an adjustable beam 18 having sprockets 19 for a roller chain 20, the top run of which is supported by the upper face of the beam 18. The chain 20 is provided with plates 21, 22, Fig. 6, forming a channel to receive an endless rubber band 23 ; the beam 18 carries a guard 43. The band 23 is supported at each end by a pulley 24, one of which is adjustable to tension the band 23 independently of the chain 20. Alternatively, the ends of the band 23 are guided by slide surfaces or by series of rollers. The bands 23 press the work into engagement with the feed chains 14, the pressure being exerted by the under face of the beam 18 which may be rigid, or may comprise resiliently mounted shoes ; shoes may be provided at the ends only of the beam 18. The bands 23 may be carried round by frictional engagement with the work, or the chains 20 may be positively driven as follows. An arm 39, Fig. 1, adjustable in length, is pivoted to each beam 18 and at its lower end surrounds a shaft mounted in the end of an arm pivoted on the shaft of the adjacent feed chain sprocket 13; the shaft carries a pinion meshing with a gear wheel on the chain sprocket shaft, and also carries a pulley driving by a V-belt 42 a second pulley mounted on the shaft 33 of the chain sprocket 19. The pulley is in two parts, one part 36, Fig. 4, being screwed on the boss 35 of the other part 34 to vary the effective diameter of the pulley ; the parts 34, 36 are provided with circumferential holes and are secured in the desired relative positions by a set screw 37. These arrangements provide adjustment for ensuring that the band 23 travels at the same rate as the chain 14.
