Abstract

421,180. Thermally-actuated valves. ETABLISSEMENTS M. HOUDAILLE, 50, Rue Raspail, Levallois-Perret, Seine, France. June 14, 1933, No. 16982. Convention date, June 16,1932. [Class 135] [See also Group XXXII] A rotary-vane hydraulic shock-absorber includes a thermostatic coil 52 acting on a rotary regulating valve 40 arranged in the interior of the hollow shaft 20 supporting the vanes, the valve being connected to a manually-adjustable plug 45 both by the coil and by a rigid rod 46 connected at its ends to the valve and plug by ball-and-socket joints, the rod permitting rotary movement but preventing axial movement of the valve. The shaft 20 is connected through an arm 24 for example to an axle of a vehicle while the base of the shock-absorber is connected to the vehicle chassis. The coil comprises two welded-together bands of metal of different coefficients of expansion and functions also as a return spring for the valve 40 when excessive impact of liquid on the shaped surface of the valve tends to close it. At its outer end the coil is clamped between folds of a ferrule 53 which seats on the neck 49 of the plug 45 and is secured thereto, for example, by a pin 54. At its inner end a similar ferrule 55 receives the coil and is secured to the valve 40 by a pin 56.
