Abstract
420,991. Writing or games board ; hinges. SCOTT, C. D., 62, Clifton Hill, St. John's Wood, London. July 4, 1933, No. 18919. [Classes 16 and 132 (ii)] [See also Group XXV] A foldable tablet or board for use as a writing support, game board, &c. comprises hingedly connected sections, and means connected with the hinges for locking the sections in butted and aligned position. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, the two sections a, b of the board are connected by cranked hinges h so that when the sections are folded they will be maintained in spaced relationship to each other, and writing paper, game pieces, &c., can be accommodated therebetween. Each cranked hinge h has hinged at right angles thereto, and on the outside edge thereof, a further cranked hinge i which can be brought into alignment with the main hinge to allow the board to be opened or closed, but which can be swung downwardly through two right angles when the board is opened out to lock the board in that position. Instead of a second cranked hinge a pair of flaps may be hinged to the sections of the board at right angles to the main cranked hinge, the flaps being connected at their free edges by a rule hinge the centre of which can be brought into coaxial relation with the hinge pin of the main hinge to allow the board to be folded. A spring on the hinge of one flap turns the flaps into looking position as soon as the board is extended. In the construction shown in Fig. 3, the board folds about a double rule hinge o the parts of which are connected by a hinge p arranged at right angles to the rule hinge. When the two parts of the hinge are folded together the board can be folded, but when the board is unfolded a spring q opens the two parts to lock the sections of the board in extended position. The top hinge leaves are extended over and secured to the flat face of the board ; in a modification the top leaves are secured by screws to the edge of the board. In a further arrangement two flat plate hinges are secured by their bottom leaves to the edges of the sections of the board, and are connected together at the top edges by a rule hinge. When the top leaves of the hinges are in alignment with the bottom leaves then the board can be folded, but when the board is unfolded a spring on the pin of one hinge forces the top leaves of the hinges flat against the top of the board, in which case the latter cannot be unfolded. If, in the latter arrangement, the top leaves of the hinges are folded flat to the edge of the board, the latter can be folded in the opposite direction, but there will be no space between the sections of the board thus folded.
