Abstract
420,979. Equalizing load on generators; charging batteries. PESTARINI, G. M., 4, Tapton House Road, Sheffield. June 8, 1933, No. 16480. [Class 38 (iv)] In an electric generating plant a prime mover is coupled with a metadyne dynamo. electric machine and a regulating dynamoelectric machine, a battery being connected across the primary brushes of the metadyne machine so that the load on the prime mover is maintained at a constant value. The regulating machine R is connected through a regulating primary variator winding PRW to the primary brushes A, C whilst another primary variator winding PVW is connected across the battery SB. The load M1, M2, M3, is connected across the secondary brushes B, D. A secondary variator winding SVW may be used to assist the secondary armature flux. At a critical speed the E.M.F. generated by the machine R is equal to the E.M.F. of the battery so that no current flows through the variator winding PRW. The winding PVW then modifies the primary flux, so that the metadyne supplies the total load. When the load M1 falls, the set begins to overspeed and current flows from the machine R to the battery SB through the winding PRW. This modifies the primary flux and causes the metadyne machine to charge the battery to provide the extra load on the power shaft. When the load produced by the motors M1, M2, M3, is in excess of the selected value, the speed of the set falls and current flows from the battery SB to the machine R so that the metadyne action is arranged to supply power from the battery to the load. In order to prevent overcharging of the battery a relay responsive to the voltage of the battery controls the fuel input of the prime mover. In Fig. 4 this relay consists of an electric motor T. In a modification (not shown) the regulating variation winding may act along both the primary and secondary brush axes and may comprise an inclined winding which combines the two effects. British Specification 417,517. and French Specifications 547,855, 623,438, and 637,946 are referred to.
