Abstract
420,062. Metal floors; girders; slabs. ROBERTSON CO., H. H., Grant Building, 3rd Avenue, Pittsburg, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Young, J. H.; 370, Jefferson Drive, Mt. Lebanon, Pittsburg, U.S.A.) Feb. 16, 1933, No. 4745. Convention date, April 30, 1932. [Classes 20 (iv) and 87 (i)] A floor comprises beams 12, 13 arranged, as shown in plan in Fig. 1, to form openings or panels 14 adapted to be covered by a plurality of pre-formed metal units 18, each of which is formed with a plurality of hollow cells closed in cross-section to constitute hollow load-supporting beams, and the units are disposed end to end so that a plurality of hollow cells are in alignment. Each unit 18 comprises, as shown in Fig. 4, a substantially flat upper plate and a corrugated under plate 19 welded thereto continuously or at spaced intervals to form the hollow cells 22, and the length of the units corresponds to the distance between the beams. The upper and lower plates are of the same length, although one end of the upper plate projects beyond the corresponding end of the lower plate so as to provide for interfitting the units end to end. Adjacent units interfit side by side by means of a depending flange 24 on one unit engaging a trough-shaped extension 26 on the adjacent unit. The adjacent ends and sides of the upper plates are welded together in position. The units may be supported by the lower corrugated plates 19 resting on the upper flanges of the beams so that the hollow cells form continuous unobstructed ducts, or the upper plates may be arranged on a level with the upper flanges of the beams, the units being then either supported by angle members 29 secured to the beams 12 as shown in Fig. 6, or directly by the upper flanges of the beams as shown in Fig. 10. In a modification shown in Figs. 8 and 9, the upper plate may be provided with depressions 42. The thickness of the metal employed for the units is at least 0À06 inch, and the height of the walls of the hollow cells is at least 3 inches. The width, depth, lateral spacing, and thickness of the walls of the cells are correlated to produce a floor having a section modulus of at least 1 inch cubed per foot width. Holes 40, Fig. 4, are provided in the side walls of the corrugations of the lower plate at the end uncovered by the upper plate to allow the passage of wires 38 adapted to support a ceiling frame 39. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to U.S.A. Specification 1,828,842, and British Specifications 377,235 and 400,924.
