[Class 17 (i).] Finishing.-A machine for use in the manufacture or repair of shoes comprises various tools, for example, scouring-tools, a heel seat shaping tool, a brush for applying size to the heels, and a cleaning-brush, arranged on horizontal separately driven shafts so that the operator has access to all of the tools without having to move his position to any great extent. The machine comprises a frame 1, 3, 5 carrying in bearings 7, 9 a shaft 11 on which is mounted a rough-scouring tool 13, the shaft 11 lying transversely of the machine, and being driven by a belt 15. Projecting upwardly from the frame is a bracket 19 carrying a shaft 21 lying above the shaft 11 and inclined slightly to a line across the machine ; the shaft 21 carries a heel breast scouring cone 23 and guard plate 26. To the left of the tool 13 is another diagonal shaft 29 mounted in an adjustable bracket 27 and carrying a heel-seat shaping and beating tool 31, and below the head 5 of the frame is mounted a receptacle 43 for size, to be applied to the heels, before final scouring, by a brush 41 driven by worm &c. gearing ; a tread rest 35 is mounted adjacent to the brush. Fine scouring of the heels after application and drying of the size is done by means of a fine wheel 65 and a superfine wheel 67 mounted on a shaft 57 carried in bearings on a casting 51 detachably secured to the frame 5 and to a bracket 49. The wheels 65, 67 lie to the right of the other tools, and the shaft 57 is driven from the shaft 11 by an Oldham coupling 59, 61, 63; the casting 51 may be removed from the frame 5 and mounted on a separate support, the shaft 57 being driven by a pulley 69. The bracket 49 carries a dust tray 71 and a dust removing brush 75 ; dust exhausting hoods are fitted to the tools. According to the Provisional Specification, the shoes are presented to a dust-removing brush before the application of the size, and the heel seat shaping tool is kept moist by a felt roll upon which water is allowed to drip ; work guides or gauges are provided to control the area of contact of the tools with the heel. The scouring-wheels each have associated with them a magazine for a roll of scouring paper as described in Specification 23046/07, [Class 60].
