[Class 18.] A wrapped or covered box or lid is made from a continuous side wall, i.e. one forming a closed figure, a separate bottom wall and a wrap or cover sheet by adhesively securing the central part of the cover sheet externally to the bottom wall and peripheral parts of the side wall to bind them together in assembled relationship ; the edges of the cover sheet may be slit to provide tab portions which are overlapped when secured to the side wall. The box may be of circular, rectangular, hexagonal or other regular contour or of elliptical, heartshaped, concave or convex contour and have round or irregularly shaped corners and the bottom wall may be inserted into the side wall to give a recessed end in which case the cover sheet is also secured to the inside of the side wall and the box may be provided with a padded bottom in the manner described in Specification 420,002. As shown in Fig. 13, the overlapping tabs 10 of the cover sheet 101 are covered by a wrap strip 107 which is turned over the top edge of the side wall 102 and the bottom wall 103 is inset into the side wall. The box is formed and covered by apparatus comprising an upper form block 40, Figs. 1 and 5, engaging the side wall of the box and an adjustable plate member 161 which overhangs the block and engages the upper edge of the side wall to move the latter with the inserted bottom wall and cover sheet attached thereto against the spring- controlled lower form block 50 which, when the box is to have a recessed end, is provided with a raised central portion 151 ; the member 161 carries spring fingers 164 which hold the side wall of the box against the sides of the upper form block. The form block 40 is carried by a plunger 19 actuated by link 20 and lever 12 from a barrel cam 11 and in moving downwards with the side wall &c. of the box positioned thereon carries the assembly past wiping brushes 60 and presser members 90. The brushes 60 are arranged around the path of the plunger at different heights and may be in inclined positions to wipe the cover sheet progressively against the side wall as the assembly is carried down and are carried by frames 80 pivoted to horizontal rods 81 connected by hooked members 77 to a pivoted cam 74 linked to studs 69 carried by a reciprocating sleeve 66 actuated from a cam 10 so that at the conclusion of the covering operation the brushes are tilted to. allow the block 40 with the covered box to pass freely therethrough. The clamping members 90 are supported by rods 92 which are slid, to clamp the box against the upper form, by lugs on the cams 74 engaging stems 95 projecting from the members. The clamping members are returned to their original positions by springs 96 and the upper block 40 then moves upwards with the completed box which, after passing the brushes 60, is stripped from the block by fingers 33 passing through apertures in the block and actuated by connections from the cam 11 ; the box falls on to the lower form block and is pushed therefrom by an ejector 99.
