Abstract

419,533. Road signals for controlling traffic. SCOTT, W. H., Gothic Works, Norwich. May 17, 1933, No. 14282. [Class 118 (ii).] A road pad for road-traffic signalling comprises a yieldable tube enclosing electric contacts and clamped between rigid sidebars having profiled or inclined faces to engage the tube. The pad is narrow, and the contacts are bedded on resilient material so that, when contact has been made, the contacts move down en bloc and the side-bars take substantially the whole load. As described, the upper contact strip 1 is situated in a channel section resilient strip 2 of insulating material which rests on the lower contact strip 1 and has its base formed with a series of holes or one or more longitudinal openings for the passage of contact studs 4 which may be carried by either or both strips 1. The lower strip rests on a cushion comprising a thick rubber strip 8 which may be perforated or ribbed and may rest on reinforced fabric strips 9. A resilient cord 7 having a textile core 6 is seated in channel member 2 above the upper strip 1 and all the parts so far described are enclosed in a rubber tube 10 and outer tyre-like cover 12. Pressure of a vehicle wheel is transmitted to the strips 1 by cord 7 and, if the pressure is great the cord 7, strips 1 and channel member 2 move down as a whole owing to the yielding strip 8, so that the wheel rests on the side - bars 14 and damage to the pad is avoided. The pad or two similar pads arranged in parallel are secured to a metal bed 15 by the side-bars 14 which have profiled sides. The leads 11 from the contact strips are in strip form and are taken to terminals in a box 16 formed in the bed 15. The box 16 is closed by a rubber disc 18 and plate 17, the end of the inner tube 10 being flattened against the end of bed 15 by a road block 19. The pad may comprise two units, each as shown in Fig. 4, arranged side-by-side with a profiled bar between them.
