[Class 61 (ii).] A device for assembling split cone valvecotters comprises a tubular member 1 with spring-pressed cotter holding dogs 2, a lever 4 pivoted to the member 1 at 6 and adapted to take a bearing direct or by means of a hook 7 on the rocker shaft or other fixed part of the engine, a guide rod 15 to take a bearing on the valve stem 16 and an inner tubular member 9 operated by a second lever 11 ; lever 4 is first operated to depress the valve spring washer 17 whereupon gripping of the lever 11 forces the cotters out of the holding dogs and into position to engage the groove 19 in the valve stem. The cotters are fed into position through openings 14 and a tubular magazine for holding a number of cotters may be provided around the member 1. The cotter removing device shown in Fig. 3 comprises a spring-pressed rod 26 terminating in a head 27 with sharp pointed prongs 29 adapted to engage between the half cotters and wedge them out of position after the valve spring washer has been depressed by the tubular member 22, the half cotters being then retained by the inturned flange 23 or gripped against this flange by ribs on a second spring plunger or held by spring fingers. Fig. 5 shows another modification for both assembling and removing cotters, the lower casing 37 forming a magazine having a tapered mouth 38 and each pair of cotters being moved into assembly on the valve stem by a spring plunger 41 ; the part 53 of the casing above the lever 46 is cut away to allow the cotter parts to be disengaged from the valve stem by a screwdriver after the valve washer has been depressed by the flanged part 54.
