Abstract
418,619. Rolling. ERICSSON, N., Bofors, Sweden. Oct. 10, 1933, No. 27910. Convention date, Jan. 11. [Class 83 (iv).] A bar of metal is pushed by hand between guides 7, 8, the bar actuating a lever 9 which initiates mechanism to feed the bar between rolls 1, 2. The lever 9 operates a piston valve 11, Fig. 4, so that compressed air flows from the supply nozzle 13 out through nozzle 14 to nozzle 16, Fig. 1, and thence to the right side of a piston 18 thereby moving the rack 21 to the left and so closing the grippers 27 on the rod. At the same time compressed air also flows from the nozzle 15 to the inlet 37, Fig. 5, to move a piston valve 46 to the top (after a slight delay which is adjustable by a needle valve) so that compressed air supply from 54 will flow through 42, 49, 48, 43, 55 and nozzle 56 to nozzle 33, Fig. 1, and thence through a bore to move the cylinder 22 to the right and carrying with it the cylinder 17 and the gripper mechanism to push the bar between the rolls. At the end of this advance, a fixed pin 63 operates the lever 62 to rotate the valve 61 to admit compressed air to the left side of piston 18 which is now balanced by compressed air on each side so that the spring 20 moves the piston forward (to right) so that the rack 21 reverses and frees the grippers 27 from the bar. When the bar has passed the lever 9 it drops, and allows the valve 11 to drop so that the nozzles 14 and 15 can exhaust to atmosphere through the bore 35. The piston valve 46 will then also drop so that the air supply from 54 passes through 41, 42, 43, 44 to 52 and thence to 34, Fig. 1, and cylinder 22 and passing on the left of fixed piston 29, the cylinder 22 and all the gripper and feed mechanism attached is withdrawn to the left, so revolving valve 61 so that the air behind piston 29 exhausts to the atmosphere through nozzles 35, 56, 48, 46 and bore 57 so that the apparatus is ready to receive the next bar. Instead of the compressed air system of feeding, the lever 9 may be replaced by a photo-cell influenced by the glowing bar to initiate a relay system to grip and feed the bar forward. The lever 9 may also directly actuate an electric switch to supply to a motor, magnet or solenoid to effect the feed.
