Abstract

A dichlorbutadiene obtained by splitting off hydrogen chloride from a tetrachlor normal butane is polymerized by allowing it to stand at temperatures of about 0--20 DEG C., for example, or by warming to about 20--50 DEG C. accompanied, if desired, by irradiation or the action of alkali or alkaline-earth metals. The use of a closed vessel and absence of oxygen is preferred. The dichlorbutadiene may be dissolved or emulsified in a diluent, and accelerating agents such as peroxides of hydrogen, sodium, barium, or benzoyl added. Softening agents and fillers may be incorporated before, during, or after polymerization, and agents preventing ageing, such as aldol-a -naphthylamine, added to the products. The polymerizates, if not already insoluble in benzene, can be made so by heat and pressure treatment for example at 140--150 DEG C. for 10 minutes. The tetrachlorbutanes may be obtained by chlorinating butadiene, and then splitting off hydrogen chloride by treatment with methyl or ethyl alcoholic potash, for example at 40--45 DEG C. According to examples: (1) dichlorbutadiene, prepared from solid tetrachlorbutane by the action of methyl alcoholic potash at 40--50 DEG C., is heated at 30 DEG C. for 1\ba1/2\be hours. The product is rolled to give a foil only slightly soluble in benzene; (2) dichlorbutadiene, obtained from solid tetrachlorbutane, is emulsified in water with about 1 per cent of its weight of hydrogen peroxide, by means of ammonium oleate or similar agent and shaken for 1\ba1/2\be hours at 20 DEG C. Coagulation with acetic acid yields a white powder which is soluble in toluene, for example, and may be reprecipitated with acetone. It yields transparent films, insoluble in benzene, on rolling at about 140--150 DEG C. and 100--150 atmospheres for about 10 minutes; (3) the product obtained from liquid tetrachlorbutane by treatment as in (1) is emulsified with ammonium oleate and hydrogen peroxide added. After \ba1/2\be hour the product is coagulated, washed and dried.
