[Class 38 (i).] A joint for cables of the type in which the insulated conductors 3, 4 are laid in pipes 1, 2 filled with oil &c. under pressure, comprises a casing 18 having at each end a flange 19 carrying bolts 22 by means of which a loose ring 24 on the cable pipe 1, 2 is moved to compress packing that forms a fluid-tight joint between the casing and the pipes. In a semi-stop joint, sleeves 5, 6 aligned with the pipes 1, 2 are closed by end plates 7 having thimbles 8 therein for the passage of the conductors. Sleeves 23 surround the adjacent ends of the sleeves 5, 6 and the pipes 1, 2 and have flared ends to receive packing 26 which is compressed when the rings 24 are tightened by the bolts 22. Automatic valves 29 equalize the pressure in the pipes 1, 2 and joint casing 18 and close in the event of a leakage in the system. Metallic braid 16 forms a shield over each joint 13 in continuation of the metal tape 10 covering the conductors. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also a through joint in which the sleeves 6, 23 and the plates 7 are dispensed with, flared ends on the joint casing 18 surrounding the pipes 1, 2, and the bolts 22 being carried in external rings welded to the joint casing, the rings 24 compressing packing 26 directly against the joint casing. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
