417,962. Implements for working land. RANSOMES, SIMS, & JEFFERIES, Ltd., and NEWSON, A. T. H., Orwell Works, Ipswich, Suffolk. June 6, 1933, No. 16289. [Class 6 (i).] In cultivators, ploughs, &c. in which the tool frames are slidably mounted on vertical standards supported on ground wheels, rack and pinion gearing driven from the wheels and controlled by the driver is provided for raising them on the standards, and means are also provided for holding them in raised position and for releasing them so as to allow them to fall when required. The racks may be in the form of sectors 7, Fig. 2, carried by a two-part telescopic shaft 8 mounted on guides 5 attached to the frame 4 and sliding on the standards 1. The rack sectors are spring-controlled and are brought into engagement with pinions 6 on the wheels 3 by pulling a cord 12 attached to an arm 13 on the shaft 8. Pivoted latches 14 hold the frame in raised position until simultaneously actuated by pulling on a cord 17 attached to a three-armed lever 18 connected by chains to the latches. The downward movement of the frame is limited by stop collars 24 on adjustable screws 21. The wheels may be adjusted laterally by moving the guides 5 along a square bar 65. The two latches 14 and the two sectors 7 mav be controlled independently so that one wheel may run in a furrow. In a modification in which the lifting mechanism is driven from ground wheels which are free to castor when the frame is raised for transport, the pinions are mounted on the vertical standards and are driven by bevel gearing. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 4, the pinion 6 is driven through a clutch 52 and the chain and bevel gearing shown and the rack 7 is in the form of a sector or wheel fixed on a shaft 35 provided with a crank 38 engaging in a slotted connecting-rod connected to a bracket 40 on the standard 1. A key 42 normally engages a keyway in the guide 5 and thus prevents the wheel standard 1 from turning for castoring purposes. It is of such length as to be free of the keyway when the guide is in its uppermost position. The clutch 52 is controlled by a trip lever moved by means of a cord. The bevel wheel 47 has a squared sleeve extension 48 along which the bevel wheel 49 slides when the frame is raised. Specification 167,896, [Class 6 (i)], is referred to.
