Abstract

417,723. Roller mills. BAKER PERKINS, Ltd., TUNLEY, A. A., and PATERSON, J. C., Westwood Works, Peterborough, and ANCIENS ETABLISSEMENTS A. SAVY JEANJEAN ET CIE, Avenue Dubonnet, Courbevoie, Seine, France. April 7,1933, No. 10503. [Class 59.] A roll refiner for chocolate, &c., comprises several vertically-arranged rolls, the trunnion housings of each of which bear upon those beneath by gravity and/or spring, &c., means, wedge, eccentric, or other variable members provided between the trunnion housings of each pair of rolls being adapted to vary the distance between the roll axes so that when an adjustment is made all the rolls on the side of the adjusted roll remote from a fixed abutment or fixed roll, are bodily displaced while maintaining their respective clearance. As shown in the Figure the trunnion housings 14 of the lowermost roller 10 are fixed while the trunnion housings 15, 16, 17 of the rollers 11, 12, 13 are slidable in vertical guideways 18. Toggle devices each comprising plates 20 and a block 21 are arranged between adjacent rolls, each block being horizontally-adjustable by a screw-threaded spindle 22 passing through a mounting 23 pivotally supported in the framework 24 so as to accommodate vertical displacements of the block-end of the spindle. A worm wheel 26 on the spindle meshes with a worm 27 on the mounting 23, the worms on the spindles associated with the opposite ends of a pair of rolls being coupled to a common operating-spindle, whereby adjustment of one end, or of both ends simultaneously, may be effected. A spring 36 acts through a spindle 37, bell-crank 38 and lever 39 to press the trunnion housings downwardly. Alternatively, counterweighted levers may be employed. The initial roller 40 may be provided with independent adjusting-means 41 or may be fixed. Levers 42 pivoted to the framework at 43 carry the trunnion housings, the levers 42, toggles, adjusting-means, and guideways 18 being located in side compartments in the framework. The levers 42 may however be dispensed with, in which case plates 45, which close the spaces between the trunnion housings, may be pressed resiliently against one of the guideways 18 to maintain the axes of the rolls in vertical alignment. In another construction of mill, each adjustable spindle 22 is formed with a tapered end adapted to move between ball or roller race elements or inclined surfaces mounted on the trunnion housings. In a further construction (not shown) an adjustable eccentric or eccentrics is or are supported between upwardly and downwardly projecting lugs on the respective housings.
