Abstract
Materials such as cement raw materials are heated and dried on the surfaces of loose bodies arranged in a layer while hot gases are passed through the layer, the material being continuously supplied and removed, but, during at least the greater part of the time in which it is subjected to the action of the gases, the bodies remain relatively stationary, while during the distribution of the material over their surfaces or removal of the material or both, the bodies are caused to move relatively to one another. The bodies may be arranged on a gas-permeable support, and may consist of iron, heat resistant alloys, firebrick or porcelain in various geometrical forms. The gases are preferably passed downwards through the layer of bodies, and may be passed through the whole or part of the layer. In one form illustrated, a layer of bodies 3 carried by a gas-permeable support 4 fixed to a <PICT:0417534/III/1> vertical rotary shaft 5 is supplied with material by a pipe line 8, and agitated by stirrers 9. The bodies now coated with material move away from these stirrers, and the material is heated and dried by gases from a rotary kiln 1, which gases pass to a flue 16. Towards the end of a revolution, stirrers 11 (not shown) similar to the stirrers 9, agitate the bodies again and shake off the heated and dried material, which drops through apertures in a support 4, and is fed by scrapers 12 into a hopper 13, whence it slides past an airtight seal 14 in the form of a bucket wheel, and so to the kiln 1. Rotary constructional parts of the apparatus are protected from the hot gases by casings 17, 18 which may be provided with air or liquid cooling means. In another form, the layer of bodies may be stationary while the support for the feed pipe and stirrers rotates. Material of larger grain may be simply deposited on top of the loose bodies, which are set into motion to remove the material after drying and heating.
