Abstract
A method of producing compositions containing chlorinated rubber is characterized by emulsifying a solution of chlorinated rubber in a water-immiscible organic solvent with an aqueous solution of an incomplete number of the constituents necessary for forming a synthetic plastic and then incorporating the remaining ingredients essential to form the said synthetic plastic so that the plastic is formed in situ. In an example a solution of chlorinated rubber in carbon tetrachloride is shaken with formalin and the emulsion heated under reflux with phenol and a little hydrochloric acid as catalyst. The mixture is heated for 1 hour and then poured into water. A yellow dough-like mass is obtained which is kneaded in warm water to remove excess phenol &c., then heated with water, powdered, and dried. This powder may be moulded hot. Other synthetic plastic reactants mentioned are carbamide, thiocarbamide, casein (e.g. ammoniacal). The synthetic plastic may be of the polyhydric alcohol-polybasic acid type, the polyhydric alcohol with water being first emulsified with the chlorinated rubber solution. The emulsification may be promoted by the addition of a dispersing agent.ALSO:A method of producing compositions containing chlorinated rubber is characterized by emulsifying a solution of chlorinated rubber in a water-immiscible organic solvent with an aqueous solution of an incomplete number of the constituents necessary for forming a synthetic plastic and then incorporating the remaining ingredients essential to form the said synthetic plastic so that the plastic is formed in situ. In an example 80 parts by weight of a solution of chlorinated rubber in carbon tetrachloride (containing 10 parts of chlorinated rubber) is shaken with 50 parts of formalin and the emulsion heated under reflux with 40 parts of phenol and a little hydrochloric acid as catalyst. The synthetic plastic may be of the polyhydric alcoholpolybasic acid type, polyhydric alcohol with water being first emulsified with the chlorinated rubber solution. The emulsification may be promoted by the addition of a dispersing agent.
