Abstract

416,571. Grinding cylinders; springs. BALL, E. D., 54, Onslow Gardens, Wallington, Surrey. Jan. 31, 1934, No. 2970/33. [Class 60.] A tool for honing cylinders comprises a body 1 with longitudinal slots to receive holders 2 carrying the grinding members ; the slots, as shown in Fig. 3, are disposed tangentially to a base circle, to give a greater bearing surface to the members 2 than that provided by radial slots. Spring means are provided for forcing the grinding members outwardly, there being means to adjust the initial pressure and the final amount of movement of the grinding members so that the rate of grinding and the final diameter of the bore may be predetermined. As shown, the members 2 have inclined faces at the ends engaged by polyhedral members 3, 4 engaging respectively right and left hand threaded portions of a central rod 5 and a sleeve 6 surrounding it. A head 51 on the rod 5 engages in a diametral slot 8<1>, Fig. 4, in a rotary member 8, in which are radial pins 7 engaging at their inner ends slots in the top of the sleeve 6 and at their outer ends slots in a rotary adjusting thimble 9. Rotation of the thimble 9 thus effects through the pins 7 rotation of the member 8, rod 5, and sleeve 6, the polyhedral members 3 and 4 being thus drawn towards one another and the members 2 being moved outwardly. When the grinding members contact with the cylinder bore, further movement of the members 3 and 4 towards one another is arrested, with the result that continued rotation of the thimble 9 screws the rod 5, and with it the member 8, downwardly, and the sleeve 6 upwardly. Below the member 8 is a cam plate 16 which bears on pins 15 extending through holes in a flange on a sleeve 13, the pins at their lower ends bearing on the uppermost of a series of compression spring washers 10, 11 which are held between the flange on the sleeve 13 and a nut 14 screwed on it. The spring washers comprise plain washers 10 of spring material alternating with washers 11 of similar material having abutments 12 arranged on mutually perpendicular diameters. The movement of the members 8 and 6 towards one another produced by rotation of the thimble 9 after the grinding elements have contacted with the wall of the cylinder causes the pins 15 to compress the spring washers, which are already under an initial compression which may be varied by adjustment of the nut 14. The thimble 9 is adjusted in accordance with the amount of material to be removed. During grinding the spring washers urge the members 3 and 4 towards one another, and so provide the grinding pressure until the predetermined amount of material is removed, when they contact with the flange on the sleeve 13 and so cease to act on the pins 15. The cam ring 16 forms a quick release device. During the initial rotation of the thimble 9 it is rotated by a spring pressed detent 17 in the member 8 through an amount determined by the lost motion between a pin 18 and a slot in the upderface of the cam. This causes the pins 15, which enter inclined recesses on the underside of the cam to be depressed to their operative position. When grinding is completed the thimble g is turned back, the cam being turned with it and allowing the pins 15 to rise and so releasing the grinding members from contact with the work.
