11 Claims.
This invention relates to a device adapted to abrade or lap precious stones and the like.
An object of this invention is to provide a device especially adapted for abrading gems.
Another object of this invention is to provide novel means for reciprocating and rotating a gem abrading tool.
A further object of this invention is to provide multiple adjustments in the machine whereby an extremely fine tolerance may be realized.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a simple and extremely efiicient gem abrading machine.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a device of the character described which an adjustable arm or link forming part of the in- I stant invention;
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view of the instant invention, showing a detail thereof, and taken on the line 33 of Figure 1 and in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 4 is a longitudinal sectional view partly in elevation and partly broken away;
Figure 5 is a sectional detail showing particularly the rider forming part of the instant invention and taken substantially on the line 55 of Figure 4, and
Figure 6 is a sectional detail of a portion of the instant invention taken substantially on the line 66 of Figure 4 and in the direction of the arrows.
Referring now more in detail to the illustrated preferred embodiment of the instant invention, like reference characters are used to indicate similar parts throughout the views of the invention.
Taking now Figures 1 and 4 as most illustrative, a stand I!) having a vertical post or riser l2 secured thereto is provided of a suitable material preferably metallic. Slidably and adj ustably mounted on the said post I2 is a bracket or arm l4, said bracket being secured by conventiona1 friction means produced by a suitable cap screw 55.
i6 mounted within the bifurcated ends of the said bracket. Secured to the other end of the said arm 14 by identical securing means is a sleeve 58 having a shoulder 20 at one end thereof abutting the said member l4 and a suitable collar 22, preferably a pressed fit, spaced from said shoulder 20 and adapted to abut the other face of the said member l4, thereby retaining the said sleeve is rigidly therein. As may be seen from an inspection of Figure 1 the said sleeve 18 is provided with double screwthreads 24 on the exterior thereof.
Slidably received within the bore of the said sleeve 58 is a shaft 26. Secured to one end of the said shaft by some suitable means such as the set screw 28 as illustrated, is provided a pulley 3!] adapted to be driven by some suitable source of power, not shown. Secured to a threaded portion 32 at the other end of the said shaft is a sleeve 34 having suitably secured thereon a conventional tool holder or set of chucks 36. At the other end of the said sleeve 34 and on the said threads 32 is a lock nut 38 for locking the said sleeve 34 and consequently the tool 40 in the desired position.
Adjacent the hereinbefore mentioned pulley is a transverse cross member 42 rigidly secured by some suitable means to the said shaft 26. Depending from the ends of the said cross member is a pair of guides or links 44 and 46, which are anchored to the said cross member by some suitable means such as a pressed fit or as illustrated, set screws 48 and 50. Slidably received on the said links 44 and. 46 is a pair of stops 52 and 54 I secured by some suitable means such as set screws 56, said stops having a pair of springs 58 secured therein and depending therefrom. Slidably received on the links 44 and 46 is a pair of blocks Ell having suitable apertures therethrough and having an appropriate pair of L-clamps 62 and center block 64 secured thereon by suitable means such as the bolts 66 shown in the drawings. An inspection of Figure 5 is most illustrative of this construction. It is noted that an aperture is provided in the center of the block 64 and received therein is the sleeve member [8. It will be further noted that a slot is provided communicating with the said aperture, having a cam follower 68 rigidly secured therein. It is noted further that the tongue or protuberance it extending from the said cam follower is adapted to rest and ride in the hereinbefore mentioned doublethreaded screw threads 24. For the sake of convenience the hereinabove discussed mechanism .shown in Figure 5 will be referred to as a rider,
since this member is rigidly joined together by the said screw 66 and is adapted to travel up and down the threaded portion of the said sleeve l8.
Secured to the said shaft 26 below the said shoulder is a stop or collar 12 being in adjustble relation therewith and fixed thereon by means of a conventional set screw 14. Abutting the said collar 12 and encircling the hereinbefor mentioned shaft 26 is a spring or resilient biasing means it having the other end thereof abutting a suitable washer l8 contacting the said shoulder 20.
Slidably and adjustably secured by means of a conventional cap screw and associated bifurcation, is an arm or platform 88 having an aperture at one end thereof for receiving a plate '82 for work-holding purposes. The preferred workholding plate 82 is constructed with a stud 84 secured at substantially the mid-point thereof, adapted to be received in the said aperture in the member 89 and is adapted to be held securely in place by a conventional knurled nut 86.
The operation of the device is as follows. The work being secured in a conventional cone or work holder is fixed to the said plate 82 and all of the appropriate adjustments are made on the device. Rotation is imparted to the pulley thereby turning the said shaft 26 which obviously rotates the tool 40. As the shaft 26 rotates the arm a2 is accordingly rotated and the herein before-mentioned rider reciprocates on the links 44 and 45, such reciprocation being necessitated by the action of the tongue (9 engaging the groove 24 as hereinbefore described. As the said rider reaches the top of the threaded portion i of the said sleeve 18, it strikes the stops 52 and 5 through the medium of the spring 58 urging the said shaft 26 upward against the action of the spring 75. When the tongue 10' engages the descending portion of the double threads on the said stationary sleeve IS the said rider is urged downward th reby allowing the spring '18 to return the said shaft 2E downward. As is now obvious rotation and reciprocation of the tool 48 is effected by the operation of this machine and thus the necessary motion for abrading or lapping gems and the like, is available.
While there has been described but a preferred embodiment of the instant invention, it is apparent to those skilled in the art that various modifications including omissions and additions may be made to the illustrated embodiment without departing from the spirit of the invention and, therefore, limitation only as to the scope of the appended claims is desired.
Having thus described this invention, what is claimed as new or improved is as follows:
1. In a gem abrading machine having a stand, a vertical post on said. stand, an adjustable horizor l bracket on said post, a double-threaded cd to said bracket and a shaft in said secured to said shaft'and in contact with said sleeve for urging said shaft upwardly, said means comprising an arm secured to said shaft, a plurality of iinks depending therefrom and a rider slidably mounted on said links, and said rider having a protuberance thereon disposed within said threads of the said sleeve.
2. In a gem abrading machine having a stand, a vertical post on said stand, adjustable mounting means on said post, a grooved sleeve secured in said mounting means, a rotatable and axially movable shaft in said sleeve, means on said shaft and cooperating with said grooves'onsaidsleeve for urging the said shaft upward, and second adjustable means on said shaft for urging the same downward.
3. In a gem abrading machine having a stand, a vertical post on said stand, adjustable mounting means on said post, a grooved sleeve secured in said mounting means, a rotatable and axially movable shaft in said sleeve, means on said shaft and cooperating with said grooves on said sleeve for urging the said shaft upward, and second adjustable means on said shaft for urging the same downward, said second means comprising a resilient member abutting said sleeve and abutting an axially adjustable collar on said shaft.
4. In a gem abrading machine, the combination of a stand, a vertical post on said stand, a double screw-threaded sleeve in said machine, means on said post for adjustably securing said sleeve to said post, a rotatable tool supporting shaft in said sleeve, and means operatively connected with said shaft for reciprocating the same, said lastmentioned means including a rigidly secured bar on said shaft and links depending therefrom, a rider slidably secured on said links and cooperating with said double screw threaded sleeve, whereby upon rotation of said shaft the said rider is urged upward thereby urging the said shaft upward, and resilient means secured to said links limiting the upward movement of said rider.
5. In a gem abrading device, a stand and a vertical post secured thereon, a vertically adjustable arm on said post and a double threaded sleeve secured to said adjustable arm, a shaft in said sleeve, means for holding a tool on said shaft at one end thereof and means for imparting rotation to said shaft at the other end thereof. means for resilientl urging said shaft axially downward secured to said shaft, and means engaging said threaded sleeve for urging the said shaft intermittently axially upward on said shaft.
6. In a gem abrading device, a stand and a vertical post secured thereon, an adjustable arm on said post and a double threaded sleeve secured to said adjustable arm, a shaft extending through said sleeve, means for holding a tool on said shaft at one end thereof and means for imparting rotation to said shaft at the other end thereof, means secured to said shaft for resiliently urgin said shaft axially downward, and means for urging the said shaft axially upward on said shaft, said last-mentioned means comprising a transverse member rigidly secured to said shaft, a pair of links depending from said transverse member, adjustable stops on said links and an axially slidable rider received on said link and in operative engagement with said double threads of said sleeve, whereby upon rotation of said shaft the said rider moves axially upward striking the said stop and thereby'imparting axial motion to said shaft.
7. In an abrading apparatus having a support, 'an arm secured to said support, a double threaded sleeve attached to said arm and a shaft extending through said sleeve, a stop adjustably secured to said shaft, a spring seated on said stop and reacting on said arm, means operatively connected with said shaftfor imparting rotativc movement thereto, and means including a rider engaging said sleeve for imparting reciprocating movement to said shaft against the biasing force i of said spring.
8. The combination of claim 7 and a transverse cross member secured to said shaft, at least one link depending from said transverse cross member and slidably associated with said rider, and resilient means attached to said link abutting :said rider upon reciprocatory movement thereof.
