Abstract
416,426. Optical sound - recording apparatus. SCHLESINGER, M. A., 218, West 42nd Street, New York, U.S.A. March 11, 1933, No. 7458. [Class 40 (ii).] A photographic sound record of the type having varying density and constant width is made on a film by modulating light from a glow lamp in accordance with sound waves, and at the same time controlling automatically by electrical means a shutter which allows light from the lamp to fall on the film when sound is to be recorded but which is interposed to cut off the light when there is no sound. As shown, the apparatus comprises a shutter 41 which is located between the lamp 11 and the film 44, and is operatively associated with a galvanometer G, connected in series with a resistance 14 which is shunted by a condenser 14<1>. The galvanometer is in parallel with the lamp 11 in the output circuit of a power amplifier 10, in which a coupling resistance 20 and a blocking condenser 13 are also arranged as shown. The amplifier 10 is fed from a two-stage amplifier 4, 7 to which a microphone 1 is connected. An auxiliary amplifier, which may be a transformer 23, is in a branch of the output circuit of the amplifier 7, and is connected to a rectifying network consisting of four rectifiers 36-39 in a Wheatstone bridge arrangement. The points 30, 31 of the network are joined to a large reservoir condenser 16, which is connected as shown to the galvanometer circuit. The condenser thus serves as a source of direct current, auxiliary to the battery 18 with which the galvanometer is in series, its potential varying with the volume of sound being recorded. In the absence of sound, the normal current through the galvanometer is such that the shutter 41 is held in closed position ; when sound impinges on the microphone, the condenser 16 becomes charged, and as a result the galvanometer is sufficiently energized to open the shutter, so that recording can take place. Two forms of shutter, actuated by a galvanometer, one of which is an iris diaphragm, and the other a blade shutter, are shown.
