Abstract

Vat-dyes are prepared by condensing an anthracene tetracarboxylic acid or anhydride of the formula <FORM:0416385/IV/1> or <FORM:0416385/IV/2> with an o-diamine or a salt thereof in presence or absence of a dissolving or diluting agent. The products are probably anthracylene-di-(arylimidazoles). Water, glacial acetic acid, acetic acid, pyridine, nitrobenzene or an excess of the o-diamine may be employed as reaction medium; the products may be halogenated in the usual manner. The above carboxylic acids are prepared by reacting aceanthrene with malonic acid dinitrile in presence of a metal chloride condensing agent and treating the product so formed with an acid chlorate solution followed by alkaline hypochlorite solution. In examples, the above tetracarboxylic acid is condensed with o-phenylenediamine and 4-ethoxy-1.2-phenylenediamine; the products dye dark-blue shades from the vat. The Provisional Specification also relates to the foregoing condensation applied to substitution products of anthracene tetracarboxylic acid or anhydride. In addition reference is made to a process wherein anthracene tetracarboxylic acid or anhydride is condensed with an o-nitroamine, this product being reduced with simultaneous ring-closure to the imidazole; also to a further process wherein the condensation with the o-diamine is effected in a low-boiling diluent to yield an intermediate which may be converted to the imidazole by a more drastic heat treatment. Reference is also made to halogenation of the products.
