Abstract

Maleic anhydride or phthalic anhydride is recovered from a gaseous mixture containing water vapour, inert gas and the anhydride obtained by catalytic oxidation of an organic substance such as benzene and naphthalene by condensing the anhydride in the presence of an inert, water-immiscible solvent therefor at a temperature below the boiling points of water and of the solvent, sufficient inert gas being present to retain the water vapour in the gaseous mixture. Suitable solvents include liquid aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, ethers, aromatic nitrohydrocarbons, halogenated aliphatic, aromatic and hydroaromatic hydrocarbons, e.g. benzene, toluene, solvent naphtha, petroleum ether, gasoline, lubricating oils, heavy naphtha, diphenyl, nitrobenzene, nitrotoluenes, diethylether, diphenyl oxide, chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, chlorobenzene, chloronaphthalene, naphthalene (which is liquid under the absorption conditions), and esters of carboxylic acids such as diethyl or dibutyl phthalate or maleate. In examples, a mixture of benzene and air is passed over a mixture of vanadium and molybdenum oxide and the resulting gas stream is passed through an absorption vessel containing a -chlornaphthalene or solvent naphtha and maleic anhydride is recovered from solution in the solvent.
