Abstract

415,405. Disinfecting. PARKIN, W. H., 51, Bristol Road, Edgbaston, Birming- ham. Feb. 22, 1933, No. 5381. Drawings to Specification. [Class 81 (i).] A solid disinfectant comprises a salt of a chlorine oxyacid, paraformaldehyde, and a substance which decomposes said salt to give chlorine and oxygen, the latter reaoting to produce formaldehyde. Volatile antiseptics such as thymol or benzoic acid, and essential oils such as oleum abietis or clove oil or oil of lavender may be added which give chlorocompounds with the chlorine present. Perfumes may also be incorporated. A mixture of calcium chloro-hypochlorite, paraformaldehyde, boric acid, volatile essential oils, thymol, and an absorbent base in stated proportions is given as an example. Potassium chlorate may be used, when hydrochloric acid is the preferred decomposing agent. Suitable absorbent bases are wood dust, magnesium carbonate, chalk or kaolin. Air may be withdrawn from the atmosphere by means of a fan, vacuum cleaner or like apparatus, passed over the disinfectant and returned. The disinfectant may be placed in a pervious bag in the path of the air flow or sucked into the dust bag of a vacuum cleaner. It may be held between two gauze discs the edges of which are clinched in a ring of channel section. Such a container may be hooked on to the wire guard of a fan or mounted in the exhaust aperture of a vacuum cleaner.
