Abstract
414,481. Securing gear -wheels, pulleys, clutch-members, and road-wheels on shafts. TRIGGS, W. W., 57, Lincoln's Inn Fields, London.-(Norton Co. ; New Bond Street, Worcester, Massachusetts, U.S.A.) May 8, 1933, No. 13324. [Class 80 (ii).] The splines of parallelsided or tapered shafts a<2> which form a driving connection with an axially slidable or rigid complemental sleeve b<2> such as a sliding gear wheel in a motor vehicle variablespeed gear, a pulley, clutch-member, coupling, or motor-vehicle road-wheel, are constructed as one, two, or three lobes 7b, 8b, 9<b>, having plane or slightly convex or concave sides tangential to cylindrical bearing portions 4b, 5<b>, 6b, concentric with the axis of the shaft. The outer surfaces 7b &c. of the lobes are also formed as concentric cylindrical bearing surfaces. The shaft may be formed wholly by transverse grinding with a conical or cylindrical cutter rotating about an axis parallel or inclined to the axis of rotation of the shaft, and either carried in a swinging frame to follow the contour of the shaft or being shaped conjugate to the contour and carried in a fixed frame as described in Specification 395,253, [Group XXIII]. The hole in the sleeve may be formed by grinding, drilling, broaching, or cutting on a gear-shaper. The intermediate cylindrical surfaces 4b &c. each include an angle of 30‹, the sides of the lobes being inclined to each other at less than 90‹. Taper sleeves are secured on their shafts by end-nuts.
