[Class 38 (iii).] A controller comprises two contact carrying rods R1, R2, moved parallel to each other by separate cams C1, C2, operated by common link and lever mechanism, the contacts K1-K7 on each rod being closed in predetermined sequence by longitudinal movement of the rods, and the sequence for one rod being different from that of the other rod. The contacts are mounted on the rods by insulating bosses N1, N2, and springs S, and the rods which have rollers P4, at their lower ends, are carried in guides S5, S6. The cams C1, C2, when engage the rollers P4, and are mounted on a common shaft have slotted extensions C5, engaging roller P3 on a pin carried at the lower end of links P1, P2, pivoted to the casing at P6, P7. The cams C1, C2 are disposed at such an angle that the left-hand contacts are operated first to exclude main resistances in a motor circuit, and then the right-hand contacts to control the shunt field. The adjustment of the contacts and their associated springs may be such that the right-hand contacts close progressively, whereas the top contact of the left hand rod is closed immediately after the bottom one, to maintain the main circuit subsequent to the opening of a normally closed left-hand contact.
