Abstract
413,353. Shock-absorbers. LUCAS, Ltd., J., and DOUGLAS, P., Great King Street, Birmingham. Jan. 16, 1933, No. 1377. [Class 108 (iii).] In an axial bore of a fluid-controlled shockabsorber of the oscillating-vane type, a cylindrical and axially-slidable valve c is provided having grooves f, g formed around its periphery adapted to co-operate with passages h, i formed in the vane a, the valve being moved in one direction by a spring d and in the other direction by the expansion of a heat-responsive member or substance j. As shown in Fig. 1, the valve is made hollow and contains the substance j which acts when heated on a plunger e abutting a plug b closing the bore. In a modification, Fig. 5, the substance is arranged in an axial bore on the vane spindle and, when heated, acts on an adjustable abutment q screwed to the valve. To adjust the valve initially a peg is inserted through a hole n and the thermostatically-operated plunger moves until an auxiliary groove m is engaged by the peg after which the end plug b, Fig. 1, or the abutment q, Fig. 2, is suitably adjusted. A passage p, Fig. 1, in the vane, or a hole p, Fig. 2, on the valve enables the fluid pressure on opposite ends of the valve to be equalized. The passage p, Fig. 1, may communicate with a fluid reservoir or with the chambers on the opposite sides of the vane.
