[Class 6 (i).] A machine for sowing root seeds &c. comprises a frame mounted on wheels or rollers and carrying a coulter and a seed box having an outlet above or at the rear of the coulter, an apertured slide forming the inner bottom of the seed box with the seeds resting freely upon it, and means driven by the wheels or rollers to reciprocate the slide to remove from the box a predetermined number of seeds and deposit them at definite intervals in the furrow formed by the coulter, the slide being interchangeable with others of different thicknesses and provision being made for adjustment of the bottom of the seed box corresponding with the different slides to prevent leakage of seeds. The frame 1 is supported on a concave front roller 2 and a plain back roller 3 and carries a winged coulter 4 and a seed box 5. A pivoted U-shaped draw-bar 6 is adjustably supported by a link 7 the front end of which carries the draw-hook 9 and is adjustable laterally. The handles 10 are offset laterally so that the attendant may walk in a furrow at the side. A levelling bar 11 is carried by bars 12 adjustably mounted on a cross-bar 13 hinged on the draw-bar 6. The bars 12 are held vertical by springs 14 on a support 15. A scraper 16 is resiliently pressed against the rear roller 3 by compression springs 16<a> bearing on opposite sides of an arm 16b. The roller is also provided with side scrapers 17. An apertured slide 20 is mounted above the bottom 22 of a tubular downward extension 5<a> of the seed box 5. It is detachably connected to a plate 23 pivotally connected to a rod 25 reciprocated by an eccentric on a counter-shaft driven from the roller 2 by chain gearing and a clutch. Interchangeable slides 20 are provided corresponding in thickness to the seeds to be sown, the bottom 22 of the box being adjustable vertically by means of a screw 36. An incline 34 leads to the aperture 21 in the slide, and the width of the aperture increases downwardly. A part 20<a> of the slide may be adjustable to regulate the size of the aperture for delivering one, two, or more seeds at a time, the seeds being delivered outside the box extension 5<a> and behind the bottom 22.
