Abstract
411,731. Covering electric conductors and other cores. BRITISH THOMSONHOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London.-(Assignees of Lewis, E. H. ; 62, Laurel Place, Bridgeport, Connecticut, and Luttenberger, B. W. ; Manheim, Pennsylvania, both in U.S.A.) Oct. 14, 1933, No. 28455. Convention date, Oct. 14, 1932. [Class 109.] Asbestos or other fibres are applied to a conductor or other core to form a felted coating thereon by passing the core 3 through a mass of intermingled non-parallel fibres to which a rotation about the filament is imparted. Upon leaving the doffer 13 of a carding machine, the fibres are acted upon by a comb 14 which destroys the parallelism of the fibres and delivers them in a loosely associated and interengaged condition so that they fall on to the core 3. A liquid adhesive material is applied to the core before it reaches the comb 14. The core, with the fibres loosely disposed thereabout, passes to a whirl 17 which is rotated at high speed. A smoothing or polishing plate 19<a> may be provided, and the covered core may be dried and have talc or other dry powder applied to it. In forming a heater cord, Fig. 9, two conductors 203<r>, 203<v> are surrounded by a coating 203<c> of rubber or other insulating material, the conductors are united by an insulating coating 203d, and finally a felted coating 203b is applied. Alternatively, the felted coating may be applied to each of the conductors around the coating 203<c> before the conductors are united by the band 203d.
