Abstract

[Class 122 (v).] In steam turbines, pumps &c. having a rotary shaft extending into a housing a zone of air which is freer from liquid vapour than the surrounding atmosphere is maintained where the shaft enters the housing in order to prevent the access of water to the oiling-system. A knife-edged baffle h is arranged on the shaft a adjacent to the oil-baffle e and dry air is drawn past the baffle h through a pipe i by impeller blades c or from an independent pressure source. In another form air supplied to one side of the baffle h is drawn off at the opposite side. In another modification, radial ducts in the rotating shaft a in communication with a central axial duct in the shaft feed air by centrifugal action to the housing adjacent the oil baffle.
