Abstract

410,539. Cleaning metal surfaces. THOMAS, H. S., Melingriffith Works, and DAVIES, W. R., St. Petroc, Park Road, both in Whitchurch, Glamorgan. Dec. 9, 1932, No. 34933. - [Class 99 (ii).] In the manufacture of tin plates or sheets or other like plates or sheets, each bar or billet is carried by a conveying mechanism past means for cooling and scraping the upper surface and is then inverted and carried past means for cooling and scraping the former undersurface. The bars are preferably separated from a pile by a stop member 6, as described in Specification 319,414, [Class 82 (ii)], and each bar is then forwarded by pusher members 5<a> on chain conveyers 5 and the upper surface is cooled by water sprayed from a jet 11 and then scraped by a chisel-edged scraper 8 carried by a pivoted arm 7 acted on by a spring 10. The front edge of the bar then engages within the hook-shaped end 14<a> of a pivoted member 14 which normally hangs substantially vertically between the conveyer chains. As a result of the combined action of the pusher members 5<a> and the member 14, the bar is inverted and is then carried past another cooling jet 13 and scraper 12. A fixed brush 15, Fig. 4, or a rotary brush 17 or both a fixed and a rotary brush as shown may be provided to brush the bar after it has been scraped by the scrapers 8, 12.
