Abstract

409,363. Rotary engines. BROOM, H. S., Temple Orchard, Amersham Hill, High Wycombe, and BROOM & WADE, Ltd., High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire. Oct. 31, 1932, No. 30518. [Class 110 (ii).] A compressed air engine 6 of the outwardlysliding vane type which is adapted to drive the spindle 1 of a drilling machine or the like, is provided with a manually operated sleeve valve 21 to control the ports and passages leading air to drive the engine in one direction or the other and to exhaust the same. Balls 29 of a governor press upon a conical member 30 to rock a lever 31 and thus actuate valves on the inlet and exhaust sides of the engine to throttle the admission and exhaust air and control the engine speed. Compressed air passes through one or more valves 36 to a chamber 5<1> and then through ducts to press out the vanes in their slots, when the engine is started up or running slowly. An auxiliary exhaust port is provided on each side of the main exhaust port, the latter being always open to atmosphere, but only one of the auxiliaries being opened at a time. The main exhaust may be in the centre of the crescent-shaped working chamber, or to one side of this position so that different degrees of expansion of the air may be secured for clockwise or anti-clockwise running. A spring 27 forces the sleeve 21 on to the tapered admission pipe E. The sleeve valve controls four ducts leading to the air admission ports, and also the auxiliary exhaust ports. The air supply to chamber 5<1> may be controlled by a centrifugal governor, or by the sleeve valve 21.
