Abstract
408,803. Average speed indicators. SALOMON, F. M. M. B., 3, Rue de l'Universite, and GOVARE, H. P., 4, Rue Guy de Maupassant, both in Paris. Oct. 20, 1932, No. 9774/33. Convention date, Dec. 7, 1931. Divided on 408,702. [Classes 106 (iii) and 106 (iv).] The calculation of the average speed is performed by a four-sided pivoted-link system in apparatus of the kind in which the primary elements of a differential gear are controlled by cams giving displacements proportional to the logarithms of space and time respectively as disclosed in Specification 283,175, [Class 106 (iii)], the cam system having been disclosed in Specification 349,338. In the apparatus shown diagrammatically in Fig. 1, the foursided link system comprises two equal links SD, SE movable independently about the point S and connected respectively to two equal links DF, EF, the pin F being slidable in a slot R in an arm pivoted also about the point S and operating a pointer 60 which indicates directly the mean speed during any period from zero setting. The points D move in circles lying in parallel planes and start in opposite directions f<1>1, f<1>2 from a common zero, the movement of the point D being effected by a spiral cam rotated, for example, by the wheels of a vehicle. The point E is similarly moved by a spiral cam from a clock. In the constructional form of the apparatus shown in Fig. 4, the distance cam 65 is driven at reduced speed through worm gearing 86, 87, a vertical spindle 88 and toothed gearing 89, 90, 91. The spindle 88 can be moved out axially to disengage the worm gear 86, 87 and then rotated by the knob 102, to return the distance cam 65 to zero. The time cam 65<1> is rotated by a spring and is controlled by an escapement, the cam being secured to a spindle, which carries the gear wheel 94, and the inner end of a spring contained in the fixed barrel 92. The wheel 94 meshes with a wheel (not shown) mounted on a spindle carrying the wheel 98 which is in constant engagement with the wide gear wheel 99 on the end of the time zeroizing spindle 100. When the spindle 100 is pushed inwards by the knob 101, the gear wheel 99 meshes with gear wheel 97 connected by the wheel 96 and a series of wheels (not shown) with an escapement, so that the time cam 65<1> is then rotated by the spring at a definite speed. When the spindle 100 is withdrawn, as shown, the gear wheel 99 is clear of the wheel 97 and the escapement is disconnected so that the gear wheel 94 may be rotated by rotation of the knob 101 thus winding up the spring and zeroizing the time cam. To prevent back rotation of the gear wheel 94 during the winding, the gear 99 is connected by gearing 103, 105 to a ratchet wheel 108 engaged by a pawl which is put out of action by a cone 107 on the spindle 100 when the spindle is pushed in to put the escapement in gear. Specification 408,884 also is referred to.
