Abstract
408,265. Glass furnaces. EVANS, W. E., 27, Chancery Lane, London..-(O'Neill Machine Co. ; 2042, Hawthorne Street, Toledo, Ohio, U.S.A.) Oct. 1, 1932, No. 27254. [Class 51 (ii).] The forehearth of a glass furnace for use with a suction gathering machine has shallow and deep portions 9, 12 beneath the points at which gathering and shearing are respectively effected. The front wall 11 of the deep portion is preferably inclined, as shown, to lead the severed portions of the gathers back into the body of glass in the tank. The forehearth is separated from the main tank by an arch 5 depending beneath the glass level, and the portion of the glass surface exposed beyond the outer arch 6 is covered by a metal plate 21 having an opening just sufficient to allow access of the gathering- tool. The temperature of the glass in the forehearth is controlled by a burner 16, and the circulation of cooling-fluid through pipes 18, which may be adjustable to and from the surface of the glass.
