Abstract
407,417. Treatment of growing plants; grafting. CASE RESEARCH LABORATORY, Inc., 203, Genesee Street, Auburn, New York, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Case, T. W., and Crysdale, S. A. ; Auburn, New York, U.S.A.) Sept. 29, 1932, No. 27042. Convention date, Aug. 25. [Class 6 (ii).] A method of treating a tree having a section of bark removed consists in inserting scions or living twigs in the space from which the bark has been removed with their ends in intimate contact with the edge of the bark, and enclosing the scions in a jacket which is water-proof and air-proof and preferably light-tight. The ends of the scions 5 are made wedge-shaped and are fitted into corresponding recesses in the edges of the bark, the scions and the junctures being coated with grafting wax and the scions being secured in position by nails &c. The bark of the scions is slit longitudinally on opposite sides to encourage the growth of calouses, the edges of the bark of the tree also being slit. The whole is washed with a formaldehyde solution or other sterilizing fluid, and then covered with layers of cheese-cloth 9 or the like wound round the tree, with taping 10 at the upper and lower edges. The cover is finally impregnated and coated with an emulsion of asphalt material 12 or other waterproof material. A thin layer 11 of damp surgical cotton or the like may be inserted between the scions and the cheese-cloth. In another arrangement the wedge-shaped ends of the scions are forced under the adjacent edges of the bark. Suckers on the tree may be used instead of scions, their upper ends being cut and brought into intimate contact with the bark. Specification 407,416 is referred to.
