[Class 85.] Earth boring means comprises a frame 1 resting on the ground and secured by preferably spiral ground anchors 2 to which it is adjustably secured by slotted clamps 4 ; plates 7 are pivoted at 6 to the frame and have notches 8 forming a guide for the borer when the plates are held together as by hook 12 and pin 13. The plates may also support the borer by engagement with a cross pin connecting boring- bar sections. For work in hard ground, spaced bars 14, Fig. 1, may be connected to the frame, a lever 16 having notches engageable with the spacers 15 to act through a swivel head 18 to apply pressure to, or to lift, the borer which is rotated by one or two ratchet braces 17. The frame 1 may be fixed in inclined or vertical positions for inclined or horizontal boring. In a modification, Fig. 7, the bars 14 are replaced by a column 24, the lever 16 being pivoted to a collar 26 adjustable on the column and held by a screw 27 or a spring-pressed pin ; the tool is driven by handles 31 or flexible shaft through worm &c. gearing in a case 23 pivoted at 29 to lever 16 and held against rotation by stirrups 30. A bracket 32 swivels on the top of the column 24 and carries a block and tackle 28 for supporting the collar 26 or, through pivot 29, the entire operating means.
