Abstract
<PICT:0406726/III/1> In apparatus for carrying out reactions under high pressure, e.g. destructive hydrogenation, of the kind comprising an inner reaction vessel 1 spaced apart from an outer pressure vessel 2, the intervening space providing passage for the reacting materials and housing the heating element 3, heat is prevented from radiating from the element 3 preferably electrically heated, to the walls of the vessel 2 by coaxially arranged polished reflecting surfaces 4, 5 preferably packed with metal foil. Gas or liquid introduced through an aperture 6 is, preheated while flowing through the spaces between the elements 4, 5 and the vessel 2, and enters the vessel 1 through jets 8, 9. Tar, &c. is supplied through an aperture 10 while the reaction products are removed through a duct 11. A tube 13 is provided for inserting a thermometer.
