[Class 100 (ii).] In machines for painting designs on fabrics or like materials with the aid of stencils, automatic means is provided for removing superfluous paint from the stencils. Suction nozzles are preferably employed, but. rollers or other devices may, alternatively, be used. The machine shown is a multicolour machine of known kind wherein stencils 8 are mounted on the upper part 3 of a table 2 reciprocated from a rotary pinion 4 by means of a double rack 5, the vertical movements of which, through the intermediary of links 6 and toggle levers 7, lower the part 3 at the beginning of the forward stroke and raise it for the return stroke, whereby the stencils are applied to a fabric 9 during the forward movements thereof ; paint is supplied from containers 11 to spraying- devices 12 under air pressure. Superfluous paint is removed by suction nozzles 15 extending across the whole width of the stencils, which, in their elevated positions during the return stroke of the table, lie close to the nozzle openings. All the nozzles are connected to a common suction pump 18, a paint separator 19 being provided for each nozzle. The nozzles may be pivoted so as to be movable into inoperative positions, and the suction current may be arranged to act only during the non- spraying intervals.
