[Class 81 (ii).] An artificial tooth for use as a single crown or in bridges or other forms of prothesis, whether of metal or plastic material, consists of two parts, viz., a porcelain crown, and a pre-formed base member shaped to fit the crown and formed either of sheet material such as metal or hard rubber, or as a solid body. Various base members are provided for each form of porcelain crown and are chosen according to the type of denture used. Figs. 1 and 3 show respectively a porcelain molar and a corresponding base member formed as a solid body, and Figs. 4 and 5 show respectively a canine tooth and a sheet metal base. The porcelain parts are each formed with an annular closed surface a lying in two planes at an angle to one another and with a surface a<11> on a pedestal or rib b. The base members are each formed with correspondingly shaped surfaces a<1>, a<11> and with pins d adapted to enter corresponding holes c in the crowns. Recesses y may be formed on the surface a to receive the plastic medium employed to connect the two parts of the tooth, and additional guides such as dovetail grooves and projections may be formed on the engaging surfaces. In modifications the pin may be connected to the porcelain crown and the corresponding recess be formed in the base member ; and sheet metal bases may be formed with projections or downturned edges to engage the material of a plastic denture base.
