Abstract

405,200. Change-speed gearing. ALVIS CAR & ENGINEERING CO., Ltd., CLARKE, G. T. SMITH-, and DUNN, W. M., Holyhead Road, Coventry. Dec. 15, 1932, No. 20484/33. Divided on 405,095. [Class 80 (ii).] Change-speed gearing suitable for vehicles with at least three forward speeds introduced on " synchro-mesh " principles, i.e. having auxiliary friction clutches for synchronizing dog clutches or other elements to be meshed, is supported in a casing split at 14, Fig. 3, about the axis of the driven shaft 16, a lay-shaft 12 being carried in the lower casing part 11. In Fig. 1, auxiliary friction clutches 29 are shown co-operating to support bearings 23 for both the driven shaft 16 and the lay-shaft 12. In the four-speed arrangement shown, all four speeds are synchronized. The reversing-means for synchronizing in known manner clutch teeth 26, 33, 40 for at least three speeds. The lay-shaft 12 and a sliding reverse wheel 13 are carried low down in the casing part 11, which is shaped as a trough. The top 14 of this trough is shown in Fig. 3 as coplanar with the axis of driving and driven shafts 15, 16, but it might be V-shaped in end elevation. The upper casing part 17 is secured to the trough by long studs 18. Each part of the casing is formed near the middle with a web 22, the two webs shown is described in Specification 405,095. In assembling, the lay-shaft is inserted through one end of the trough and threaded through the lay-shaft gears and bearings. The bearings and an end lay-shaft gear 35 are positively located as by circlips 47, but the other lay-shaft gears 24, 31, 37 are located by engagement of their herring-bone teeth with like teeth of their mating gears. Specification 352,858 also is referred to.
