[Class 87 (i).] Bricks in a rank formed by cutting a clay clod by wires are separated apart outwards on both sides of the centre brick by overhead pallets only to facilitate drying. A clod of clay is passed laterally from a clod-supplying machine and cut to length by an operator. It is then pushed forward, by a mechanically - actuated back board, through wires which sever it into ten or more or less bricks, which are pushed on to a stationary table a. A series of pendent overhead plates c are supported on spaced guide bars c<1> which are supported in the frame f of the apparatus so as to be lowered by cams h and advanced by cams g. Pallets d are carried by the plates c so as to be capable of rising and falling movement relative thereto and are lowered by the cams h onto the individual bricks when a rank of bricks is in position. They may, if desired, be pressed downwards by springs. Overhead barrel cams i, mounted on the shaft i<l> which carries the cams g, h, and having throws increasing from the centre outwards in both directions, engage bowls j<1> of shanks which play in slots in the plates c to move the bricks in a rank outwards from the centre. The pallets d are then advanced by the cams g to advance the rank of bricks clear of a rank behind it. The spaced bricks are pushed by the succeeding rank of bricks into a tray ready for removal to the place where the spaced bricks are to be dried. These trays may be removably carried on supports so as to be moved forwards automatically by the driving mechanism for the separating apparatus.
