Abstract

Readily oxidizable metals such as magnesium or magnesium alloys are protected from oxidation while in a molten condition by maintaining in contact with the surface of the metal an atmosphere containing fluorine or the vapour of a fluorine compound which may be a compound containing fluorine and any of the following elements: antimony, arsenic, bismuth, boron, bromine, carbon, chlorine, hydrogen, iodine, nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorus, silicon, sulphur, tin, and titanium. Ammonium borofluoride, silicofluoride, bifluoride, and fluophosphate are referred to as examples of suitable compounds. If fluorine is used, it may be prepared by a process such as that described in Specification 346,774, [Group XXXVI].
