Abstract

<PICT:0404452/III/1> Commercial carbon black is treated to bring it into granular form and thereby increase its apparent density by subjecting it to turbulent agitation, with or without the application of heat, within a closed container so as to cause the particles to cohere and be formed by impact into substantially spherical granules; if heat be applied, it should not be such as to cause oxidation. The treatment may be carried out in a ball mill or in a closed cylinder provided with agitating blades. Granulation is facilitated by the addition of a portion of carbon black having the desired form. As shown, a shaft 22 bears spaced blades 30 arranged at 60 degrees apart and inclined alternately at 45 degrees to the axis of rotation, the shaft being mounted to rotate in a closed cylindrical casing 10. Surrounding one end of the shaft 22 is a hollow shaft 26 carrying a bail-shaped scraper 34 arranged to rotate in the clearance space between the blades and the cylinder at a slower rate than the blades and in the same direction. In operation, the cylinder is half filled with carbon black and, if heated, the temperature is maintained below 400 DEG F.
