[Class 44.] A lock in which the pivot axle of the bolt operating mechanism lies parallel with the door has a curved key guide, for the reception of a key with a flexible shank, which lies parallel with the door at its inner end but emerges perpendicular thereto. As shown in Fig. 1 the bolts 6 are retracted by pins 4, 4a on a disc 5 which can be rotated, when a locking mechanism 3 has been freed, by the bit 11 of a flexible shank key inserted in the curved guide 2. In the arrangement shown in Figs. 4 and 5 the bolt 6 is actuated by the pins 4 on the disc 5 engaging rack teeth on the bolt. The key guide to the outside of the door is curved, while that on the inside extends downwardly and a pivoted flap 24 is provided at the junction of the two guides just before they enter the lock mechanism 3. The part of the outside guide passing through the door may consist of a curved guide carried in a sleeve 15, Fig. 8. The sleeve is inserted through the end rings 16 which are engaged with the door boring by the sleeve 15 forcing teeth 18 into the wood. The key handle 9 has a knob 10 to indicate the position in which the key must be inserted. Fig. 13 shows a locking mechanism consisting of divided pin tumblers aligned by the cam of the key bit 11 so that the member 43, which carries the bolt operating pins, can be rotated by the key bit 11. The flexible shank is constituted by elements 8, each having a transverse cylindrical recess at one end and a transverse cylindrical lug at the other end which fits in the recess of the adjacent element 8. A binding wire extending the length of the shank runs through central axial apertures in the elements 8. The key guide has a key hole cover 45 which is turned to allow its recess 47 to engage a pin 48 so that the cover can only be opened after axial movement by the fingers. The key guide is channelled at 41 to receive a lug 40 whereby the key must be correctly inserted and whereby the key bit cannot jamb the tumbler pins by attempted axial or rotary movement when not in correct setting. The lock is secured to the door by screws 59, Figs. 17 and 19, which enter screw-threaded aperture 60 in transverse rods 58 inserted in bores in the door.
