[Classes 136 (i), 136 (ii), and 136 (iii).] In a bicycle of the type propelled wholly or in part by the rider in a semi-recumbent position, the seating-surface for the rider is disposed below a plane passing through the wheel axles, so as to give greater stability. The frame comprises two parallel members a, b bent and joined together at the rear and connected at the front by crossbars 5, c. A shield or body e of plywood &c. is suspended from the frame to form a box-like girder structure reaching nearly to the ground, the lower edge being strengthened by a rib f. A seat g with a sloping back h is supported on the rib. The top may be covered by streamline cowling, leaving only a cockpit for the rider, who may be protected by a light hood. The axle j of the rear wheel k is mounted in members m, n suspended from the frame, and is driven by two freewheel sprockets o, p and reciprocating chains y, which wind on sprocket wheels q, r and are connected by cables x and adjustable collars w to treadle levers s, t suspended from the crossbar 5 and acted on by springs v. The sprocket wheels q, r are on a common shaft, so as to effect the return movements of the treadles. The bicycle is steered by a handle-bar and a front fork 2 mounted in a ball-head 3 supported by the crossbar c and a stay 4. Small auxiliary side wheels are adapted to be lowered to the ground.
