Abstract
402,831. Sound receiving and transmitting devices. MARCONI INTERNATIONAL MARINE COMMUNICATION CO., Ltd., Marconi House, Strand, and HINTON, N. P., 57, Broughton Avenue, Finchley, both in London. June 10, 1932, No. 16476. [Class 40 (iv).] A pressure wave transmitter and /or receiver suitable for use in echo sounding, subaqueous signalling systems and for detecting underwater bodies, such as icebergs, comprises a magnetostrictive body closed upon itself and a subsidiary magnetic member of low reluctance associated therewith and so arranged that a plurality of parallel paths for magnetic flux are provided within the body and through the member. Fig. 1 shows a straight bar Y of high permeability material surrounded by a winding L arranged within a magnetostrictive body M, which is shown as a hollow rectangle but may take the form of a ring, so as to leave a small air gap at each end of the bar, the paths taken by the magnetic flux being indicated by dotted lines. In the modification, Fig. 3, a cross-shaped yoke member Y having the winding L distributed as shown over the four limbs thereof is arranged within the magnetostrictive ring M. According to a further modification, Fig. 4, the yoke Y is arranged externally of the ring M and is provided with radially extending pole pieces Y'. In the Fig. 3 construction radiation takes place mainly from the outer surface of ring M and in the Fig. 4 construction mainly from the inner surface thereof.
