Abstract

402,630. Lubricators. HEUSER, A., 21, Ehmannstrasse, Stuttgart, Germany. March 1, 1933, No. 6253. [Class 12 (iii).] A device for lubricating the wheel flanges of railway vehicles or the rails on which they travel is arranged to provide a supply of lubricant which is continuously effective during travelling but sufficient only for running on straight portions of the track and a supplementary supply of lubricant which becomes effective only on curves and upon the occurrence of severe rocking movements. Fig. 1 shows an installation diagram for a tender locomotive. A pump 2 containing a number of separately regulatable elements forces lubricant from a supply tank 1 through pipes 3 .... 6 continuously to the lubricating points 7, ... 10 associated with the wheel flanges or the rails. Two additional pump elements supply lubricant through pipes 11, 12 to a control device 13, controlled for instance by the displacement of the axles relative to the frame. Two methods of obtaining this adjustment are shown. According to the nature of the curve, the control device is automatically adjusted to supply lubricant through pipes 14, 17 or 15, 16 to the wheel flanges which are grinding. On straight stretches, lubricant is returned to the tank 1 through a return flow valve 18 and a pipe 18a. In Fig. 5, three similar pump elements 19, 20, 21 of which two 19, 20 are connected, are arranged by means of a control device to supply lubricant to the points 23, 24. The control device comprises a plug member 22 with vanes 36 operating in a casing 35 provided in its lateral wall with closed passages 42, 44 connecting respectively ports 41, 41a, and 43, 43a. In the position shown, the double quantity of lubricant from the elements 19, 20 and the single quantity from the element 21 are equally divided between the two outlets 38, 40. According to the nature of the curve entered, the plug 22 is automatically rotated to supply the double quantity to the point 23 and the single quantity to the point 24 or vice-versa. In a modification of the arrangement in Fig. 1, the pump 2 supplies through conduits, two lubrication points and a third conduit leads to a control device for the supplementary lubrication. Fig. 8 shows an arrangement in which a restricted supply of lubricant passes to two lubrication points on straight stretches of track, through a single conduit 29, and an increased supply to one of these points is automatically brought about by rotation of the control member 30 on entering a curve. In all the arrangements, the pump may be driven directly by the wheels or other moving part of the engine so as to supply equal amounts of lubricant over equal running distances independent of the speed of the vehicle, and the control member may be operated when desired by an auxiliary hand control.
