Abstract

402,544. Retting. PERCIVAL, S., 40, Chancery Lane, London.-(Fibres Textiles Soc. Anon. ; 2, Rue Docteur Elie Lambotte, Schaerbeek, Brussels.) March 7, 1933, No. 22497/32. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Aug. 22, 1932.] [Class 120 (i).] Plants are retted by immersing them in water, the temperature of which is never allowed to exceed 35‹ C., and to which there is added a soluble agent comprising saponified oils or fatty acids, soluble carbonates or chlorides, and hyposulphites or hypochlorites or oxides of the Na2O type. The oil or fatty acid used are preferably those derived from the seeds of the plant to be treated, e.g. in the case of flax, linseed oil is used. The total amount of reagents added preferably do not exceed 2 per cent of the weight of the fibres being retted. In an example, medium quality flax is immersed in water at 28‹ C., the aforesaid soluble agent being added on the third day and the flax removed on the fourth day.
