[Class 40 (iv).] A mouthpiece for a telephone handset comprises a protector adapted to be secured to the transmitter casing to retain the microphone unit against loss or removal and one or more additional parts forming a flare adapted to be detachably mounted in front of the protector so as to be removable without removing the protector. The protector a as shown in Fig. 3 comprises a cap having bayonet slots b adapted to be engaged by pegs and locking devices on the body of the handset. The cap is formed with a perforated platform c having a ridge e on the under face of which the microphone unit is adapted to rest and provided with pins g adapted to engage in bayonet slots k in the flange j of the additional part shown in Fig. 6. This part comprises a cup shaped portion h, the long wall of which is made thicker than in the standard mouthpiece and is formed with a chamber n which is preferably filled with a solid or plastic disinfectant or a tray or drawer filled with disinfectant may be inserted therein. Perforations o allow of the passage of disinfectant vapours into the sound passage m. Fig. 8 shows a similar form of protector to that shown in Fig. 3 but formed with a slot 2 adapted to open into the chamber n and with a circular groove 3 in its upper surface fitted with a rubber ring 3a. The co-operating cup portion shown in Figs. 10 and 11 is formed with a non-perforated sound passage m the inner end of which is extended at 4 so as to contact with the ring 3a, the vapour from the chamber n passing through the slot 2 and back through the perforations d in the platform c into the passage m. Each side of the chamber n is formed with a step 5 which forms an abutment for a cover or end of a tray. Fig. 12 shows one form of tray shaped to fit the chamber n and provided with two small holes 6 adapted to be engaged by a pin or hook so as to withdraw the tray from the chamber.
