Abstract

402,429. Rockets. MAINGUET, H., 10, Rue Garanciere, Paris. June 1, 1932, No. 15576. Convention date, June 1, 1931. [Class 9 (i).] A projectile of streamline shape having a blunt nose portion terminating at the plane of maximum cross-section of the body and a tapering rear portion is propelled by combustion products ejected rearwardly in the neighbourhood of the plane of maximum cross-section from a cap such as 5, Fig. 5, enclosing the nose of the body and extending as far as the said plane, the cap directing the gases along the tapering sides of the body. The projectile may be fitted with stabilising fins. A burner 7 contains fuel for producing the propelling gases which are discharged forwardly, diverted at 8, and escape through orifices in the annular gap a a. The gas producing means may be a rocket charge ignited by a wick, percussion cap, electric spark or other suitable means. The body 6 may contain fuel for feeding burner 7 or an explosive charge. A similar body propelled by gases derived from combustion of a liquid such as heavy oil comprises a burner 7<1>, Fig. 6, fed with pulverised oil and air and electrically ignited. For starting, air is supplied to the burner by a compressor or a compressed air cylinder, but in motion air is collected by a dished nose piece 9 having passages 10 communicating with the burner 71. Air arriving at 11 passes through tubes disposed in the combustion zone and is thus preheated.
