[Class 106 (iv).] An apparatus for recording the periods of operation of vehicles and machines comprises a clockworkdriven drum carrying a record strip, and a stylus moved by a cam rotatable around the drum and connected to the speedometer shaft or other moving part of the vehicle or machine. The drum 1 is driven by clockwork mounted on a plate 11. A cam 12 surrounding the drum 1 is rotatable around a boss on the plate 11 and has secured to it a worm wheel 15 engaging a worm 17 driven from the vehicle or machine. The gear ratio may be changed by changing the worm 17, the plate 11 being slidably mounted on a base plate and adjusted by screws 27 for this purpose. An arm 36, Fig. 5, carrying a stylus 18 attached to a spring 19 is slidable on a vertical pillar 21, a roller 22 on the arm 36 being kept in contact with the cam 12 by a spring 24. The stylus is thus reciprocated up and down the record strip by the cam 12. The record strip in the form of a collar is slipped over the drum 1 and held by clips 26. The stylus may be lifted from the strip by turning a hand-lever 37 attached to a cam 33. A pin 49 on the cam 12 actuates a counter to register, in the case of vehicles, the total mileage. The instrument is covered by a case and is rendered waterproof by a gasket 51A. In a modification, the stylus is pressed forward by a helical spring surrounding a plunger. In place of one roller 22, two may be provided, one bearing above and one below the cam track 12.
