Apparatus for measuring speed and distance in a vehicle by recordings on a diagram disc is installed in a mainly cylindrical housing 2 and adapted to use a disc 6 of greater external diameter than the internal diameter of the housing 2 by arranging for the disc 6 to be curved when inserted in the housing 2. A cylindrically curved support 4 for the disc 6 is formed as a drawer unit 3 with a housing 14 provided with pins 15, 16 engaging grooves 17, 18 in the housing 2. The front 7 of the drawer 3 carries a lock 9, speed warning lamp 10 and a clock 8 whose hands are driven by mechanism in the housing 14 which also drives a clamping plate to which the disc 6 is secured by a nut 24. The front of the housing 2 carries the dials of a speedometer and distance meter. A drive shaft driven by the vehicle through a flexible drive, drives an eddy-current speedometer, the distance meter and a cam 63, while a shaft 34 under the influence of the induced eddy currents balanced by a return-spring 36 drives the speedometer needle shaft 39, which in turndrives shaft 54 carrying a lever 57 with a stylus 58 to record speed on the disc 6. Levers 59, 65 with stylic 60, 66 are mounted freely on the shaft 54 and are operated respectively by the cam 63 through a roller 62 and spring 61 and by a pendulum 64 supported by spring 67 for oscillation between stops 68 to record distance and periods of operation of the vehicle. The shaft 54 is carried by a bridge 53 pivoted on the shaft 51 about which it can be rocked through a lever when the lock 9 is operated in order to lift the stylii 58, 60, 66 free from the disc 6 when the drawer 3 is free to open, without unmeshing the gear train between the shafts 34, 39, 51, 54. An alternative embodiment is described with reference to Fig. 5, (not shown) wherein the diagram disc is mounted at and angle of 45'degrees to the axis of the housing in order to reduce its length as well as its diameter for a given disc diameter. The housing is closed by a hinged cover containing the speed and distance display and the clock housing and diagram disc support unit is pivoted to the cover and guided in the housing so as to swivel into a favourable position for inserting a disc-when the cover is opened. The speed measuring mechanism at the rear of the housing transmits movement to the speed indicating needle in the cover through a cable and pulleys.
